Outreach Counsellor

Full Time – One Year Term (with the possibility of extension)

As counsellor, we offer professional counselling and outreach support services to people in the Battlefords and surrounding area. Our purpose is to assist individuals to build on their strengths and find positive ways to understand and act when faced with challenges in their lives. We offer a wide range of counselling to individuals, couples, families and groups.

The Outreach Counsellor will provide support, groups, psychoeducational sessions and education to students, individuals, and families in a caring, client-centered and confidential atmosphere that supports clients to build on strengths, identify barriers and work towards positive change. The Outreach Counsellor will be adaptable in approach, well organized and proficient in time-management, workload prioritization and self-directed work planning.

As a member of the Counselling Team, the Outreach Counsellor will support the objectives and priorities of the counselling team as well as those of the program to which they are primarily assigned. The primary assignment will be determined by the Executive Director or designate with the following considerations – client service needs, the Counsellor’s suitability to meet those needs, and the Counsellor’s professional development goals.                        

This position reports directly to the Manager of Counselling Services. The Manager of Counselling Services will also seek ongoing feedback from the manager of the program, to which the Outreach Counsellor is primarily assigned, on their effectiveness and contributions to the assigned program.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Social Work or a university degree in related counselling field. Those candidates with a post-secondary degree in the social sciences/human-service field and relevant experience may be considered. Salary will be based on a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of a range of counselling theories and practices
  • Effective public speaking and group facilitation skills, including the ability to facilitate psychoeducational groups using a strength-based, empowering, culturally sensitive and solution-focussed manner.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to build and maintain collaborative and professional relationships within and outside the organization.
  • Strong organization, conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector query.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends when required.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of mental health and addictions treatment approaches and options.
  • Ability to maintain the dignity and integrity of the clients receiving services by providing confidential, culturally sensitive, and supportive approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Provide outreach support to groups, individuals, and families using a range of acceptable treatment approaches.
  • Develop and facilitate education/information sessions for staff, clients and groups in the community on relevant and current mental health issues.
  • Provide counselling to individuals, couples and families using a range of acceptable treatment approaches.
  • Refer clients to appropriate resources and services when required. Maintain case records and reports that conform to CFS policies, procedures and program guidelines.
  • Seek timely and appropriate consultation and supervision.
